SEATTLE, Sept. 04, 2001 -- While Boeing today established its world headquarters in Chicago, company leaders also reaffirmed Boeing's presence in the Puget Sound area.

"The Puget Sound area is still home to several major Boeing business units and more than 80,000 employees, representing our largest presence in any single location in the world," said Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes and leader of the Boeing Puget Sound regional leadership team. "We remain excited about our business, our future and our participation in the Pacific Northwest community."

The following Boeing business units are located in the Puget Sound region:

• Commercial Airplanes, led by Mulally, continues its Washington state headquarters in Renton and has operations that extend from Puyallup to Everett. The largest Boeing operating unit in the region employs almost 60,000 people who design and produce all Boeing commercial airplanes except the 717. Boeing Commercial Airplanes also offers the broadest array of services to support the almost 12,000 Boeing airplanes operating around the world.
• The Shared Services Group, led by Laurette Koellner, senior vice president of The Boeing Company and president of Shared Sevices, is based in Bellevue, Wash. Of the 18,000 employees in 45 U.S. cities and seven countries, more than 11,000 work in Puget Sound providing services to Boeing business units locally and around the world. Business services include computing, telecommunications, e-commerce, travel, transportation, facilities, security, fire protection and purchasing. People services include safety, health and environmental planning, training, employee programs, tuition reimbursement, virtual office, fitness centers, food services and recruitment.
• Military Aircraft and Missile Systems, led by Frank Statkus, is based in south Seattle. The organization employs approximately 4,500 people who support the development and production of military-aircraft and defense-system products and programs such as the Joint Strike Fighter and the F-22 Air Dominance Fighter.
• Space & Communications, led by Paul Bay, is based in Kent, Wash. This organization employs nearly 2,200 people who work on various programs aimed at increasing commercial applications in space.
• Phantom Works, led by Hank Queen, is the company's research and development arm. The unit employs more than 1,700 people at various Puget Sound locations, but primarily at Kent facilities.
• Connexion by Boeing, led by Scott Carson, provides high-speed, cable-quality Internet and company intranet data services for passengers in flight and for other airborne platform uses. The business has campuses in Kent and in Irvine, Calif., with more than 275 team members located in the Puget Sound area.
• Air Traffic Management is led by John Hayhurst and based in Kent and Washington, D.C. This business employs more than 100 people who are developing a new concept to provide a safer, higher-capacity air traffic system.
• Boeing Capital Corporation, led by Jim Palmer, is headquartered in Renton. This business unit employs more than 50 people who provide financing and leasing for the company's products and services as well as financial services for other businesses.

The leaders of these business units join Mulally to comprise the Boeing Puget Sound regional leadership team. The team reiterated Boeing's active role as a corporate citizen and participant in the Puget Sound community. In the past three weeks alone, Boeing has provided:

• a $100,000 grant to the Western Washington University Engineering Department
• a $250,000 grant to the Senior Services of Seattle/King County
• a $300,000 contribution to the Puget Sound-area Salvation Army
• a $1 million endowment to the University of Washington Business School

"The Puget Sound community has served Boeing very well and we want to say thanks for supporting the company and providing a wonderful home for all of us," Mulally said. "Our world headquarters may be in Chicago, but the operations located in Puget Sound are proud and happy to be right here."
